Love Lives On
After all is said and done,
In spite of the pain man inflicts on man,
Amidst thoughtless violence,
And unfeeling cruelty,
Love still lives on in the heart of man.
Often slumbering,
Permitting him unhindered,
To loot, rape, torture and murder,
To pursue selfish interests
Without thought
Of the suffering caused to others.
Nevertheless,
Loves awakens suddenly,
Unexpectedly leading even ogres sometimes
To unwanted gentleness,
Often transforming its bearers
Into missionaries of thoughtful service.
And so,
Amid all the quarrelling,
The fighting,
The senseless hatred and destruction
Which characterizes human civilization today,
Softness still tempers Man.
